Bishop’s Palace Garden Festival

A fantastic time was had by all at this year’s Bishop’s Palace Garden Festival. Our British grown scented Pinks proved to be a firm favourite amongst visitors as always. After completely selling out of flowers on day 1 we were forced to restock for day 2. We also had one particularly familiar fellow visit our stall to check out our awarding winning aroma.

Winning Silver Gilt at Chelsea 2015!

“We’re breeding funky new pinks with a fragrance!”

Having an amazing time at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year already! We have just won Silver Gilt, and I am so proud of my team! We’re breeding funky new Pinks with a fragrance, in our Whetman Cocktail Pinks Collection. Promoting British cut flowers and growers and rich, rich fragrance. Thoroughly enjoyed the BBC TV coverage of our work last night and everyone’s support.

We are back at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for another year, in the Great Pavilion, stand GPB3. This collection is available to buy from QVC, follow this link:

When I get back from Chelsea I will put them up on website for sale too!

Our 5 cocktail pinks are:

Cherry Daiquiri - a beautiful lilac blush with a raspberry core

Cosmopolitan - redcurrant-coloured blooms with a deep cherry red centre

Mojito - pure white, semi-smooth-edged flowers fading to a citrus centre, giving a subtle nod to the refreshing lime, mint and rum-based drink

Tequila Sunrise (shortlisted for RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2015)

- creamy yellow petals with a pink lipstick-kiss ring in the middle

Each cocktail is a unique garden Pink (stems 12″-15″), hardy, fragrant, graceful – a breakthrough in our breeding programme.

If you are attending Chelsea please pop along to our stand GPB3 to see our display of versatile hardy, fragrant Pinks as we’d love to meet you.  The floral centrepieces at the show have been created by Sue Griffiths and contain more than 3,500 flowers. All flowers and plants were grown on the nursery in testing weather conditions.

New Website

Happy Easter!   Let’s hope we are blessed with at least one day’s decent weather over the holiday when we can get out into the garden!  Look out for that Easter Bunny….eating your Pinks!

I just wanted to let you know that we have a brand spanking new website designed for us by Daneswood in Exeter.  I hope you like it and enjoy the information pages on how to get the best from your Pinks.

We have turned the clock back some 25 years and we are growing a crop of cut flowers.  This is all very exciting because we know how many people are frustrated at not being able to buy British grown (and British bred!) summer flowers.  There are Pinks, Freesias, Anemones, Ranunculus and  Tuberose.   Only the Pinks are listed on the web pages but if you are interested in the other flowers, just drop us an email or phone the nursery and we will answer your questions.

Welcome to Spring

At long last we have said goodbye to winter days and welcome to Spring!  Everywhere are gorgeous daffodils, magnolias, camellias, primroses and trees ready to burst open their new leaves.  I am very excited  – 15 years ago I planted a Magnolia campbelli mollicomata Lanarth in the garden (what a mouthful!) and it has produced its first ever flowers this year!  20 feet tall, there are 30 waterlily shaped pink flowers near the top of the tree.  Patience has finally been rewarded!

We are very busy now sending out plants to you and thank you for all your compliments.  It is lovely to have such positive feedback.  Our RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibit is coming along – we just need some sunny warm weather to bring the flowers on!  This year we have a small crop of cut flowers for you (if you aren’t growing your own) and we look forward to inspiring those who are unfamiliar with the fragrance and grace of Pinks.

Keep your questions coming – we’re here to help if we can!

Reminder:  keep a look out for unwelcome aphids which may be feasting off the sweet young buds of your pinks.  Get rid of them in any acceptable way.   Give your pinks a booster this Spring by applying a balanced fertiliser 1:1:1 to encourage growth.  Once the flower stems have started to lengthen and the buds are forming, change the fertiliser to a higher potash feed 1:1:2,  this will strengthen the stems and enhance the colour of your blooms.

Enjoy your gardening!

Merry Christmas!

Alzheimer’s Society People Awards

Whetman Pinks is delighted to have attended the Alzheimer’s Society People Awards held at St. James’ Palace.

The awards were presented by HRH Princess Alexandra, the Royal Patron of Alzheimer’s Society.

Whetman pinks is proud to have been able to send more than £25,000.00 to Alzheimer’s Society since the launch of the stunning new Dianthus ‘Memories’.

The original hoped for target was £15,000 but thanks to invaluable commitment by Bransford Webbs, Homebase and generous donations from many of our customers, this target has been far exceeded.

Alzheimer’s Society informed us that:

…the income we have received from the sales of the Dianthus Memories plants is supporting a major study that Alzheimer’s Society is funding, into a drug called Liraglutide.

This is a drug which is currently being used to treat people with diabetes.

This major drug development study will tell us more about the effects of Liraglutide on Alzheimer’s disease.

It is a particularly exciting area of work and you can read more about it at the Alzheimer’s Society website.
